The origins of Louis Kahn, the charismatic architect. The world's first and long-awaited collection of all residential works.
What kind of sunlight enters your room? - Louis Kahn

When you think of Louis Kahn, the first thing that comes to mind is the handsome concrete buildings such as the Kimbell Art Museum and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. However, it is not well known that Kahn was passionate about housing design from the time he was a young draftsman in his 20s, and completed nearly 50 housing projects, including plans. There were 20 private residences, of which 9 were actually built. It is said that until his death in 1974, Kahn never turned down a residential job, no matter how big the project was or how busy he was. What was housing for Louis Kahn? This question was the impetus for creating this book. I visited every existing Kern home, took photos, talked with the owners, and studied drawings at my alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. It became clear that residential design was the origin of Kahn's design approach and the basis of all of his work. This book introduces all of the houses from his first private residence in 1940 to his final years. Looking through his design approach to homes over more than 30 years, I feel like I've just completed my journey through Caen. --Yutaka Saito

Product Description
After the era of the so-called masters of modern architecture such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe had ended, this book collects the residential works of Louis Kahn, a "late master'' who was able to break away from their sphere of influence and create truly unique architecture. Kahn's masterpieces are probably relatively large-scale buildings such as the Kimbell Art Museum and the Salk Institute, but the houses that Kahn painstakingly built are far more attractive than these. There is no doubt that masterpieces like the Kimbell Art Museum are important, but it would be impossible to talk about architect Kahn without mentioning the Fisher House and the Esherick House, for example. However, until now there has not been sufficient Japanese-language documentation about Kahn's residential works. It is true that many books about Kahn tend to be unbalanced, presenting at most small drawings and a few photographs of his residential works. This is a book that will solve this imbalance all at once.
In order to approach Kahn's house, it is absolutely necessary to take the time to read and understand the drawings. The structure's tight proportions, the thoughtfully designed spaces, and the combination of materials that still retain their freshness over the years all have a depth that cannot be captured by just looking at them superficially. It is a truly thorough document, with beautiful photographs showing the richness of the four seasons and various drawings carefully inserted, for example, 60 pages devoted to the Fisher House. As you turn each page, you will be amazed once again by the overwhelming density of Kahn's architecture.

At the same time, one cannot help but be impressed by the fact that the 20 houses in Caen have been carefully maintained and still maintain their beautiful appearance, nearly 50 years after they were built. There is certainly a form of architecture that is loved there. It is not uncommon to see the homes of many architects at the mercy of history or get into trouble, and are in a sorry state. However, the quality of the Caen houses collected here is surprising. In particular, the words that Mr. and Mrs. Fisher talk about when looking back on the time of construction eloquently speak of what can be called the happiness of architecture. Khan could give it, and they could enjoy it. In this book, readers should be able to get a glimpse of that. (Naohiko Hino)
