Product Description
Modernist architects have become commonplace in magazines, and the name Le Corbusier has become widely known. This architect/painter/agitator, who led the development of architecture in the 20th century at the cutting edge and left many works that are considered masterpieces, is certainly a unique figure with an irresistible charm.
Simply put, Le Corbusier was essentially a residential architect. His architecture was always about creating a space for humans to live in, and even if a part of that living was carved out and planned as a specific facility, his architecture was always a vessel for humans to live in. This may seem obvious, but it is unique to this architect. This is always clearly established in his architecture.
This book is in a sense unsympathetic, simply a cool enumeration of drawings and model photographs of all of Le Corbusier's residential works. Plans, elevations, and cross-sections are lined up at a certain scale of 1:400, and there are a few photos of models. However, if you slowly read the information arranged in chronological order, you should be able to read the architect's vivid thoughts. This clearly shows the architect's maturing thinking. The composition of the three-dimensional space that gradually increases in complexity, the obsession with bringing in and absorbing natural light, the amplitude of consciousness that is sometimes stoic and sometimes sensual, there is a richness to be read that goes against the coolness of the page layout. In order to track the progress of the project, as much progress as possible is included, covering 106 works and 210 proposals.
There is no need to read and understand from the beginning. It's good to just roll it under your pillow and flip through it. Following the architect's 3D image while reading 2D drawings is a kind of training, and it is not something that can be mastered immediately. It's not uncommon to feel boredom like chewing sand. However, little by little, he was able to imagine architecture through drawings, and began to think about architecture through drawings. Drawings are still an irreplaceable architectural medium. Photographs are, of course, an excellent and easy-to-understand medium, but there is a level of architecture that cannot be grasped with just that, and this is always considered through drawings. It takes some kind of training to understand the thinking of such architects. However, there are few books that are as suitable as this for training. (Naohiko Hino)
