Author: Atsushi Okui
Studio Ghibli Executive Officer, Image Department Manager/Executive Imaging Director.
Born in 1963 in Shimane Prefecture. Joined Asahi Productions in 1982 and began working as a photographer. Became the director of photography for the first time with "Dirty Pair". Since then, he has served as the director of photography for "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack'' and "Mobile Suit Gundam F91,'' and has participated in Studio Ghibli films as the director of photography for "Porco Rosso'' and "The Sea Can Hear.'' In 1993, he transferred to Studio Ghibli at the same time as the photography department was established. Participated as a cinematographer in "Pon Poko'', "Whisper of the Heart'', "Princess Mononoke'', "My Neighbor Yamada-kun'', "From Poppy Hill'', and "The Wind Rises.'' He was the visual director for "Spirited Away,'' "Giblies Episode 2,'' "Howl's Moving Castle,'' "Ponyo,'' "Arrietty,'' and "When Marnie Was There.'' Other works include "Mary and the Witch's Flower'' (Studio Ponoc production, video direction). He served as director of photography for director Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, How Do You Live?

Editor/Writer. During his student days, he majored in theoretical physics. After graduating, he worked on sonar AI research at a company research institute, but retired after less than a year. After working as an editor and writer for an aviation magazine, he became the editor of the animation magazine "Newtype." After that, he moved to Studio Ghibli's publishing department. He learned the importance of filming while watching the production of "Princess Mononoke'' up close. Next, he was responsible for the series composition and script for the TV animation "Gasaraki" (1998-1999). In addition to being involved in various works as an animation scriptwriter and editor, he also serves as a screenwriting lecturer at Nihon University College of Art, Department of Film Studies (retired in 2020).
