Exceeding ?gHokusai Manga?h!? The unknown charm of Kyosai is condensed. Skeletons, frogs, and monsters dance! dance! Festivities!
Kyosai Kawanabe (1831-1889) was a Kano school painter who also painted many ukiyo-e from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. In recent years, his free-spirited painting style has attracted attention, and his hand-drawn paintings and prints have been introduced in many exhibitions and books, but on the other hand, there is a genre called "picture books'' that has not received attention until now.
The term "picture book" does not refer to a book for children, but rather a woodblock print of Kyosai's various paintings compiled into one volume. It contains Kyosai's dynamic and humorous drawings, ranging from skeletons to anatomical drawings, frogs, cats, and monsters, and was published in large numbers in his later years as his popularity increased. Perhaps because they were put together in a hurry, one of the characteristics of "picture books'' is that many of the books lack a sense of unity in their content.
This book contains 224 representative "picture books" including "Kyosai Manga", "Kyosai Fuunga", "Kyosai Suiga", and "Kyosai Hyakki Gadan" from the printed editions of the Ota Memorial Museum of Art. Carefully selected. In order to clarify Kyosai's line of sight, he categorizes his works into three main genres: "People and Skeletons,'' "Animals and Nature,'' and "Youkai and Gods and Buddhism.'' By reconstructing all of his works with illustrated explanations, the Edo period and modern times are combined. We will take a closer look at the charm of Kyosai, who was known as the "painting demon'', such as the wonders of ukiyo-e that go back and forth between the two, and his unique sense of humor and humor.
This book is published as a series following Seigensha Bunko's long-selling "Hokusai Manga'', all three volumes. Thanks to the special technology of Yamada Photo Engraving Co., Ltd., a print from 150 years ago has been brought back to life.
*All works come with explanations. Understand Kyosai's humor and parody!
