??Afterword??
This story is based on the Tibetan folk tale "The Prince Who Turned into a Dog." A prince of a certain country, who was worried about the lives of his poor people who had no grain, after a difficult journey, stole grains of wheat from the dragon king, and for that purpose he was magically transformed into a dog. However, it is a folk tale in which he is saved by the love of a girl, and finally brings wheat to his homeland.
?Omitted?
Ever since I first read this folktale over ten years ago, it has been a dream of mine to make an animation of this folktale, but
with the current situation in Japan.
There is no way such a simple plan will pass.
In fact, I had given up on the idea that it should be animated in China, but
this time, with the recommendation of the people at Tokuma Shoten,
I decided to create my own version of it in some way.
It's up to you.

Hayao Miyazaki (Author)

Product Description
An all-color picture story drawn by Hayao Miyazaki. This work was written around the same time that "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'' began serialization in "Animage'' in 1982. The painting is beautifully colored by layering many pale watercolors.
Shuna, a prince from a poor country where crops cannot grow, sets out on a journey to the west in search of the "golden seeds" that are said to bring fertility to the land. During their arduous journey, they meet sisters who are sold as products in a town that buys and sells humans. After helping them, he arrives alone in the "Land of the Gods" and finds a golden seed... The strength of human beings to survive no matter what the circumstances. Kindness that only a strong heart can produce. And weakness and helplessness. Miyazaki depicts such things as they are in his short stories.

The creation of the worldview and the power of the pictures to express it are overwhelming. In particular, there is no hesitation in the creation of the insects, plants, giants, and moon that abound in the "Land of the Gods.'' It's as if we're being shown the original scenery that unfolds inside his head, and it's so vividly powerful. This worldview, in which death and life, joy and fear, come together has appeared many times in Miyazaki's subsequent works.

This work is the result of Miyazaki, who was impressed by Tibetan folk tales and gave up on making an animation because it was a "simple project'' and instead created "his own version of the film.'' However, if it had taken on the form of anime, aimed at everyone, it would have been something different. The unique atmosphere of this book, in which the story progresses calmly and solemnly, can be said to be attractive only in the form of a picture story. (Kadokura Shima)
