About the author
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1927. After attending the Tokyo Army Infant School and the Army Preparatory Academy, he graduated from the Faculty of Buddhism at Komazawa University. Completed doctoral course at the University of Tokyo Graduate School. After serving as a professor at the University of Tokyo, he is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and a professor at Aichi Gakuin University. Doctor of Literature. Majoring in Chinese Buddhist history and Huayan teachings. Received the Academy Award. Tendoryu Aikido 5th Dan. His publications include "History of Chinese Buddhism'', "What the Buddha Sees'', "What is Zen?'', "Eight Buddhism Guidelines'', "Introduction to Tendai Thought'', "Kegon Thought'', "Heart Sutra Discourses'', and "Chinese Zen''.
