Japan in the early 1950s, when the period of high economic growth had not yet arrived. The main character, Satsuki, and her father and son, Kusakabe, move to the rural Tokorozawa suburbs. They begin life in their new home while looking forward to their mother's discharge from the hospital. Shortly after they move in, Satsuki's younger sister Mei encounters a mysterious creature at a shrine near their house. To Mei, it sounded like "Totoro".

There are no particular incidents that seem like incidents. The main characters are not on a special mission like in "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'' or "Castle in the Sky.'' However, they enjoy their daily lives and try to live to the fullest. The accumulation of ordinary everyday details creates a rich time.
