[The Book of Five Rings]

Why did Harvard Business School choose this book as a textbook for business administration?

A life guidebook written by Miyamoto Musashi, the ultimate realist, who teaches the philosophy for winning in any difficult situation. Koen Nishikai, who has written many books on business communication for Japanese people and is also active as a consultant in this field, has translated it into modern language with a modern perspective. The columns at the end of each book also provide hints for reading comprehension.

Musashi Miyamoto (author), Koen Nishikai (translator), Michael Blaise (translator)

About the author
Miyamoto Musashi
Born in 1584 (Tensho 12). Died in 1645 (Shoho 2). The founder of the two-sword style swordsmanship known as Niten Ichiryu. His name was Niten and his name was Genshin. In the Book of Five Rings, it is written that he was born in Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture), but there is also a theory that he was born in Mimasaka (Okayama Prefecture). It is said that he fought more than 60 serious matches in his lifetime, starting from the age of 13, and never lost. In 1612 (Keicho 17), when Musashi was 29 years old, his duel with Kojiro Sasaki on Ganryu Island (Funa Island; Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) is very famous. From October 1943 (Kanei 19), he holed up in Reigan Cave on Mt. Iwato (Kumamoto Prefecture) and began writing the Book of Five Rings. He also left behind excellent works of calligraphy and painting, such as "Drawing of a Dry Tree and a Crow'' and "Drawing of a Reed Geese.''
