The Book Of Tea [Japanese-English Translation] (Japanese Translation)

Review(0)

Categories:Japanese Culture

A bilingual Japanese-English translation of Tenshin Okakura's The Book of Tea. Born in Yokohama at the end of the Edo period, Tenshin Okakura (real name: Kakuzo Okakura) was introduced to English from an early age by his father, a trader, and grew up as a cosmopolitan person. Tenshin, who studied under Fenollosa at Tokyo Kaisei School (later the University of Tokyo) and accompanied him on antiquities surveys across Japan as an assistant and interpreter, focused his efforts on preserving Buddhist art, which was in decline in the aftermath of civilization and enlightenment. Tenshin, who founded the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (currently Tokyo University of the Arts) and the Japan Art Institute, and became a central figure in the New Japan Art Movement, published this book 100 years ago while speaking fluent English. This book, which explained in detail the nature of the tea ceremony with even humor and explained the aesthetic sense of Japan and the East to Western Europe, was considered an important clue for Western intellectuals at the time to understand the values ??of the East and Japan, along with "Bushido,'' which was published earlier. First published in New York in 1906. "The Book of Tea'' is a thin book, like the transparent wings of an insect, but once those wings tremble, the essence of the Japanese spirit resonates far and wide. - From the preface ?gSounds of the Art of Life?h (Mr. Seigo Matsuoka)
