The animated film version of "AKIRA'' was released in theaters in 1988 and revolutionized the world of anime beyond the realm of manga. Although this anime was produced under an unusual production system with original author Katsuhiro Otomo himself serving as the director and scriptwriter, it is an exceptional masterpiece that has received worldwide acclaim. This book is the first volume of a two-volume collection of the vast amount of storyboards that Otomo himself drew up in order to produce the anime version. This rare item, which was previously published by the Young Magazine Editorial Department in 1988 in two volumes, but went out of print for a short period of time and has been a premium item for a long time, is finally being reprinted as the title of the first edition of the "Katsuhiro Otomo Complete Works''. In 1988, the animated film "AKIRA" that he produced received high praise outside of Japan and became the forerunner of the Japanese anime movement (Japanimation) overseas.
In 2013, received the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Japanese government. In 2014, he was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government.
